Bakery Education in the UK & Ireland
Training the next generation of bakers and supporting them is right at the heart of everything the ABST stands for. In this ever changing world, the next generation of bakers will need lots of skills and ingredient knowledge to be successful whether they are planning to open their own business, or work for ingredient suppliers, craft or in a plant bakery.
The ABST remains focused on supporting all training bakers to develop both skills and knowledge. Although there are many different paths into baking, many future bakers start at either college or university. Each year, the UK and Ireland train hundreds of bakery students in college, university and the workplace.
If you are interested in training to be a baker, it is definitely worth checking out the below list of bakery colleges and universities to see what courses they offer and where in the country they are located. The list below is always being updated with new training establishments and if you know of one that we have accidentally missed off, then please let us know so we can add them as well!

BAKERY Level 1 - 3 | College Courses
These are the colleges that offer college level bakery training. Normally this ranges from Level 1 - 3 and will focus on the basic skills to produce bread, confectionery such as cakes and biscuits, cake decoration and sugar flowers. There would also be basic technical understanding taught at these levels so that successful students would have a good understanding of the function of basic ingredients and bakery processes.
Bakery Degrees - Foundation and undergraduate
After learning the basics of bakery, it may be worth considering whether to study at a higher level, and progress onto a bakery degree. There are a number of universities in the UK and Ireland that offer a degree in baking, and in some cases you can progress from Level 3 onto the foundation degree at the same training establishment. Studying at degree level is much more academic, but it can open up more doors in the industry and higher paid starting salaries. Always ensure that you check out each university and going to an open day for the ones you are interested in is definitely worth while.
